Advancing Early Childhood Education Through Purpose-Built Design
Delaware State University sought to expand and strengthen its early childhood education pipeline with a dedicated facility to support learning from certification through degree completion. The need called for a purpose-built environment that could accommodate hands-on instruction, professional training, and community engagement, all within a modern and flexible academic setting.
Solution
StudioJAED served as the design architect and engineer for the new Early Childhood Innovation Center in Dover, Delaware, providing full architectural and engineering services from programming through design and construction support.
Working in close collaboration with the University and State stakeholders, the team developed a two-story facility designed to support a wide range of educational and professional development functions. Key elements of the completed project included:
- A first-floor lab school providing real-world learning and teaching environments
- Upper-level classrooms and offices dedicated to education and certification programs
- Spaces designed to support Child Development Associate (CDA) credentialing and statewide professional development
- User-centered layouts that enhance functionality, collaboration, and accessibility
- Integration of future-ready building systems to support evolving program needs
- Sustainable design strategies and welcoming public-facing spaces
Despite a fast-tracked schedule, StudioJAED successfully guided the project through early construction milestones, including a structural beam signing in September 2024, with delivery achieved in early summer 2025.
Impact
The completed ECIC serves as a statewide hub for early childhood education, supporting nearly 500 scholars annually through degree programs, certification pathways, and professional training initiatives.
The facility provides a modern, flexible environment that enhances both teaching and learning, while reinforcing Delaware’s commitment to strengthening its early childhood workforce. By combining academic spaces with hands-on training environments, the ECIC establishes a strong foundation for future educators and expands access to high-quality early childhood education resources across the state.
