Modernizing a Community Library for Flexible Learning and Digital Access
Cross’ Mills Public Library engaged StudioJAED to renovate and modernize its facility, transforming underutilized areas into flexible, technology-enabled spaces that better serve the evolving needs of the Charlestown community. The project focused on improving the library’s interior environment while expanding opportunities for remote work, virtual learning, telehealth, and community collaboration through the creation of new private and multipurpose spaces. The renovation also enhanced finishes, furnishings, and overall functionality throughout the facility.
Solution
StudioJAED worked closely with library leadership to develop a renovation strategy that balanced modern functionality with the welcoming character of the existing facility.
Key elements of the project included:
- Comprehensive interior renovations throughout the first floor and basement
- New finishes, flooring, furnishings, and interior upgrades to refresh public spaces
- Creation of private technology-enabled meeting rooms to support remote work, education, and telehealth
- Development of flexible multipurpose spaces for community programs and collaboration
- Improvements to the library’s functionality while maximizing the use of existing space
- Integration of modern technology and acoustic considerations to support a variety of user needs
Impact
The completed renovation transformed Cross’ Mills Public Library into a more versatile community resource that supports both traditional library services and the growing demand for flexible, technology-driven spaces. By creating new areas for collaboration, virtual connectivity, and private work, the project expanded the library’s role as a hub for learning, wellness, and community engagement while ensuring the facility continues to meet the needs of residents for years to come. The renovation provides a modern, adaptable environment that strengthens the library's ability to serve the community now and into the future.
