Progress Energy, headquartered in Raleigh, N.C., is a diversified energy company serving approximately 2.9 million customers in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. At the beginning of 2000, Progress Energy completely restructured its Facilities Management group, which oversees approximately five million square feet of facilities distributed across its service territory in the Carolinas. The need for improvements in the Facilities Management Program increased once Progress Energy began a series of mergers and acquisitions aimed at positioning themselves strategically for deregulation. Acquisitions of North Carolina Natural Gas and Florida Power nearly doubled the portfolio of buildings to over ten million square feet. StudioJAED conducted a complete Facilities Condition Assessment to assist Progress Energy with managing this new growth.
